Project: Rest Beach – Beach Profile Survey
Type: Coastal/Marine, Environmental
Client: City of Key West, Florida
The C. B. Harvey Rest Beach Park is the only Key West beach featuring natural vegetation. It is handicap accessible with a wheelchair runway over the dunes, a bike path and a picnic area making it a perfect area to enjoy a family experience on the beach.
G.M. Selby’s involvement with this beach starts approximately in 2005, when we first performed the beach profile survey post Hurricane Katrina, and established new survey baselines. We extend the survey waterwards to over 400” from the mean high waterline (MHWL), ground truth along profile lines to determine the extent of seagrass and hard bottom communities, calculate the sand volume losses due to the hurricane and assist the city in presentations to FEMA for recovery.
As the 2005 hurricane season was the most active season on record, these services were performed a number of times as Hurricanes Rita and subsequently Wilma passed over the area and multiple times in subsequent years.
