Project: Smathers Beach Beach Nourishment

GM Selby was retained to perform all tasks necessary to obtain a Federal Permit for the beach nourishment of Smathers Beach, due to critical beach erosion accumulated over a period of time as impact from hurricanes and tropical storms hitting the shoreline. We were tasked to perform the following services; Environmental Assessment under NEPA, natural resource identification, archeological and cultural resource impact management and identification, Endangered Species, wetland evaluations, and other sensitive habitat evaluation as well as all coastal engineering.

The project included the restoration and stabilization of approximately 3,000 feet of beach shoreline along Smathers Beach. The following tasks were performed:

  • Overall Environmental Assessment and Impact Evaluation using USACE approved Guidelines.
  • Biological Habitat evaluation, including endangered species.
  • Evaluation of potential impacts and mitigative procedure to offset the impacts.
  • Environmental program and management plan to ensure a sustainable project.
  • Design of the Project with details to ensure environmental compatible and a sustainable project.
  • Reduction of field data to acceptable format for Federal Agencies.
  • Identification of threats and vulnerability assessment and measure to offset such threats.
  • Construction feasibility and associated costs.
  • Interaction with all State and Federal Agencies for permitting this project in a National Marine Sanctuary.
  • Maintaining all Community Right to Know Act requirements through advertising and public meetings.
  • Pre construction Biological monitoring
  • Construction Management and all the environmental monitoring required for minimizing impacts per NEPA and State Statutes.
  • Detailed reporting on Turbidity, endangered species and other general physical conditions to meet permit requirements.
  • Post construction Biological monitoring.
  • Post Construction Physical monitoring to ensure environmental sustainability of the project.
