Project Background
These beaches are highly valued public recreational areas in Key West. They not only provide scenic and accessible spaces for residents and visitors but also support sensitive seagrass and hard bottom habitats. Repeated hurricane activity in the region necessitated ongoing monitoring and management to maintain beach safety, usability, and environmental integrity.

G.M. Selby’s services included:
- Performing beach profile surveys extending over 400’ from the Mean High Water Line (MHWL)
- Mapping the extent of seagrass and hard bottom communities along profile lines
- Calculating sand volume losses caused by hurricanes
- Assisting the City in preparing FEMA recovery fund applications for beach renourishment
- Conducting repeated surveys as needed in response to ongoing hurricane impacts
Project Significance
This project ensures that South Beach, Simonton Street Beach, and the Dog Beaches remain safe, accessible, and environmentally sustainable. G.M. Selby’s surveys provide critical data for hurricane recovery, beach restoration, and long-term coastal management, helping the City of Key West maintain both recreational amenities and natural habitats for residents and visitors alike.
