The project provided essential data on sand volume losses, seagrass, and hard bottom communities to guide recovery planning and FEMA-funded beach restoration following hurricane impacts.

Project Background

These beaches are highly valued public recreational areas in Key West. They not only provide scenic and accessible spaces for residents and visitors but also support sensitive seagrass and hard bottom habitats. Repeated hurricane activity in the region necessitated ongoing monitoring and management to maintain beach safety, usability, and environmental integrity.

Scope of Work

G.M. Selby’s services included:

  • Performing beach profile surveys extending over 400’ from the Mean High Water Line (MHWL)
  • Mapping the extent of seagrass and hard bottom communities along profile lines
  • Calculating sand volume losses caused by hurricanes
  • Assisting the City in preparing FEMA recovery fund applications for beach renourishment
  • Conducting repeated surveys as needed in response to ongoing hurricane impacts
