Project: Neptune Reef Artificial Reef Design
Type: Coastal/Marine
Client: Neptune Memorial Reef
About 3 miles off the coast of Key Biscayne exists an artificial reef unlike any other. Besides the fact that it is the largest conceived artificial reef in the world, Neptune Reef is a memorial site that honors the legacy of life with unique underwater structures.
Neptune Reef was designed by G.M. Selby to be an artistic representation of the Lost City of Atlantis. Our team was responsible for designing modified artificial reef structures, such as the foundation, columns, and dome, which required evaluation of wave conditions. The project meets the strict environmental guidelines and permitting of the EPA, DERM, NOAA, Florida Fish and Wildlife and the Army Corps of Engineers. The structures have acted to sustain a thriving marine habitat, as well as create an environmentally conscious yet lasting opportunity for a memorial. The reef has been a startling success in promoting the survival of many types of coral, fish, and other key species of the coral reef community.
