Project: Smathers Beach – Beach Profile Survey
Type: Coastal/Marine
Client: City of Key West, Florida
On the south side of the island of Key West along the Atlantic Ocean lies Smathers Beach, the largest public beach in the City, at about 3000 feet in length. It is a beach of extreme importance to the City as it very frequented by tourists and locals alike.
G.M. Selby performed the beach survey extending over 400’ from the mean high waterline, determined the extent of seagrass and hard bottom communities along the profile lines, calculated the volume of sand losses due to hurricanes and assisted in obtaining recovery funds from FEMA in order to renourish the beach.
Due to the hurricane activity in the area, these services have been provided multiple times as necessary prior to renourishments.
