Project: 40 Year Re-Certifications for Miami-Dade County
Type: Civil
Client: Miami-Dade County
The collapse of a building in 1974 claimed the lives of seven FDEA employees in Miami. This tragic accident was the catalyst for the Miami-Dade County’s decision to implement a system for verifying the integrity of public buildings, in order to prevent similar future accidents and protect the lives of its residents. Hence, Miami-Dade is the first county in Florida to require building re-certification for buildings 40 years or older. The program exists “for the purpose of determining the general structural condition of the building and the general condition of its electrical systems.”
G. M. Selby has performed a multitude of the inspections necessary to re-certify a building, both in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties and its municipalities. Both the electrical and structural portions of these inspections are performed in house. Amongst them are inspections performed for high rise buildings, condominiums with multiple buildings as well as private owners and governmental entities, such as the Miami-Dade Internal Services Department.
