Project: Berg & Kitsos Nature Walks
Type: Civil, Structural, & Environmental
Client: City of Key West
Berg and Kitsos are two elevated nature walks located above wetlands preservation areas owned by the City of Key West. These areas were destroyed by a storm surge as a result of hurricane wind forces leaving behind an eroded beach and lifting the boardwalk from its pilings.
Subsequently, the City closed the nature preserves to nature lovers, bird watchers and pedestrians. G. M. Selby designed the new concrete piling foundations and boardwalks, prepared the construction drawings, and obtained permitting from local authorities as well as from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and Monroe County. The construction was monitored both from a civil/structural point of view as well as from an environmental perspective due to its location on wetlands and the proximity of the boardwalks to the Coastal Construction Control Line.
